A 71-year-old vehicle maintenance operator died after being struck by his work vehicle while providing roadside assistance in Canton on Monday afternoon, police said.

The man, who has not been identified, was conducting roadside maintenance when his vehicle shifted into neutral and rolled backward, hitting him, Baltimore Police officials said in a news release.

Officials responded to the crash in the 900 block of South Kresson Street just before 1:20 p.m. Monday. Emergency personnel rendered aid, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

There have been at least 14 fatal crashes in Baltimore so far this year, according to data from Maryland’s Highway Safety Office. Two other people in Baltimore died in crashes this month.

A 66-year-old man died at a hospital after being struck by a car while walking in the 2500 block of Greenmount Avenue on the morning of Sept. 18. Nine days prior, a 46-year-old man was struck by a car in the 400 block of East Patapsco Avenue in Brooklyn just before 6 a.m. He was taken to a hospital where he died.
