An officer with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police fatally shot a man on Friday evening in Fort Washington Park, state investigators said.

Police were called to the park in Prince George’s County around 6 p.m. for reports of a shooting and a man carrying a gun near the river, according to a news release from the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. The officer encountered a man near the river and at some point fired his weapon and struck him, according to the news release.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered near him, investigators said. The U.S. Park Police arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting.

In most cases, the OAG will release the name of the involved officers and the decedent within two business days. Weeks later, state investigators will release the officer’s body-worn camera footage.

It was not immediately clear what led to the officer firing his weapon or what happened during the encounter. The Independent Investigations Division with Maryland’s OAG is asking the public with information about the incident, “including cell phone or private surveillance video,” to contact them at (410) 576–7070 or by email at IID@oag.maryland.gov.
