A student was taken into custody after a stabbing that injured two staff members at a Harford County elementary school on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Officers responded to reports of an assault at Roye-Williams Elementary School just after 3:30 p.m., around the same time that class was dismissed, according to a news release from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. The two employees who were injured were taken to a hospital and have since been released, according to the release.
The altercation was between the student and two staff members, and no students were injured, the sheriff’s office said, adding that the student involved was “quickly” detained after the incident.
“The safety of our students and school staff is my absolute priority,” Sheriff Jeff Gahler said, according to the news release. “While state law limits the information we can release at this time, please know that swift effective actions were taken by school staff and responding deputies to prevent further injury. I am incredibly grateful for the brave actions of the school staff and our School Resource Officer, whose quick response brought this situation under control.”
Investigators with the sheriff’s office are working with the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services and the Harford County state’s attorney’s office to determine the next steps in this case. No other information has been shared about the student taken into custody.
The Harford County school, located in Havre de Grace, has about 443 students and 26 teachers, according to its website. The school teaches children from prekindergarten to 5th grade.
