The tarmac at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport was buzzing Friday morning after workers discovered about 20,000 bees resting on a baggage cart.

A mass of bees covered a corner of the bright blue cart, forcing airport officials to call in a beekeeper for help in relocating them.

Video shared by BWI shows the beekeeper carefully use a brush to push the bees into a box, then transer them into what appears to be a beehive box.

The group of bees swarmed the beekeeper, who was dressed in head-to-toe gear.

The baggage cart appeared to be empty in photos shared by BWI.

Jonathan Dean, a spokesperson for the airport, said in an email that BWI relies on wildlife management services from time to time for airport safety issues.

“Usually, that means birds,” Dean wrote. “In this case, our airport Sustainability Manager was able to coordinate with a local beekeeper to safely capture and relocate the bees to a suitable habitat well away from the airport.”

There was no impact on airport operations, he added.

It was not immediately clear what caused the gathering, or where the bees were relocated.
