A driver who fled a traffic stop in Bowie on Wednesday afternoon crossed a roadway into oncoming traffic and struck an uninvolved vehicle, killing its driver, police said.
The Prince George’s County Police Department said its officers pulled over the driver, who is “a suspect connected to an open investigation,” around 2:45 p.m. on Lanham Severn Road. The suspect initially pulled over but then fled the scene as officers approached, Assistant Chief George Nichols said in a news conference. A commander at the scene advised officers not to pursue the suspect, Nichols said.
About half a mile down the road, around the 12800 block of Ninth Street, the suspect crossed a roadway’s double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle, police said. The woman who was driving that vehicle was killed. Another vehicle also was struck but no one in it was hurt, Nichols said.
The suspect was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Nichols would not say what the open investigation was related to, but he added that it did not meet the criteria for a police pursuit, which include “murders, robberies and serious assaults.”
The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit are looking into the incident.
