Maryland State Police are searching for a suspect they say shot at a trooper during a traffic stop early Tuesday in Baltimore.
The trooper, whose name was not immediately released, was injured in the shooting and transported to a shock trauma center, according to a state police news release. In an emailed statement, state police said the trooper “narrowly escaped the gunshots” and suffered powdered burns from the close proximity of the shooting.
Police said the trooper was released from the hospital later Tuesday.
The trooper pulled over a gray Infiniti at the intersection of Belle Avenue and Milford Avenue in Northwest Baltimore just before 3:30 a.m., according to the news release. The vehicle was one of two pulled over for driving at a “rapid rate of speed” with no lights on, state police Acting Superintendent Michael A. Jackson said in a press conference on Tuesday. When the officer approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, the driver opened the door and fired two rounds of shots at the trooper, police said.
The driver then fled the scene, driving east on Belle Avenue, according to the news release. Police said the windows of the vehicle were tinted, the front end was damaged and the headlights were broken.
Jackson said that when the person is caught, they will be charged with attempted murder of the state trooper.
Mayor Brandon Scott and Police Commissioner Richard J. Worley said in a joint statement on Tuesday afternoon that the Baltimore Police Department and Baltimore County Police Department were working with state police to find the suspect. Law enforcement agencies were still working to identify the suspect, according to the statement.
“We are committed to using every available resource to help bring this individual into custody alongside our partners,” the statement said, adding that the “senseless act of violence” endangered the trooper and the city. “It will not be tolerated, and we will not rest until the person responsible is held accountable.”
The Anne Arundel County Police offered prayers for the trooper.
The search and investigation are ongoing. Police urged the public to call 410-653-4200 with any tips.
