A Darnestown man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges related to a fatal 2025 crash.
Liam Coskun, 19, entered guilty pleas in Montgomery County Circuit Court to grossly negligent manslaughter and the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Coskun, who will be sentenced in October, faces a maximum penalty of 13 years in prison.
He was driving a 2018 Jeep Compass in Gaithersburg on May 31, 2025, when he crashed into a stopped 2017 Toyota Corolla, in which 88-year-old Myrtle Gottlieb was a passenger, prosecutors said.
Gottlieb died June 4 from injuries sustained in the crash.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Sam Eig Highway and Fields Road. Several hours later, Coskun consented to a breath test that measured his blood alcohol concentration at 0.09%. The legal limit in most states is 0.08%. It is zero for those under 21.
Investigators determined that the crash was avoidable and Coskun failed to stop for a red light before rear-ending the Corolla.
The driver of the Corolla was also injured in the crash, prosecutors said.
