Gaithersburg Police arrested a student on Tuesday for possessing a loaded handgun on campus, city officials said.
An anonymous tipster informed authorities that a particular student had the gun on school grounds, according to a statement from the City of Gaithersburg.
Gaithersburg Police responded to the school at about 9:15 a.m.
School staff, school district security and Gaithersburg Police confronted the 17-year-old and found the gun in his backpack equipped “with an extended magazine and bearing an obliterated serial number,” the city’s statement said.
It added that there is no ongoing threat to students, staff or the community.
The student was not identified by city officials and was charged with possessing a dangerous weapon on school property and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number, among other charges.
