A Mount Rainier man was indicted for murder in connection with the 1993 disappearance of 10-year-old George “Junior” Burdynski, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Joseph Lynch, 61, also faces charges of manslaughter, accessory after the fact, second-degree child abuse and two counts of second-degree sex offense, according to a statement from the Prince George’s Office of the State’s Attorney.
It was unclear on Wednesday afternoon whether Lynch had retained an attorney. Court records show an initial court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 6.
Burdynski disappeared after leaving his Brentwood home on his bicycle in May 1993 and was never found, according to NBC 4. The FBI and Prince George’s County Police announced last month they believed Lynch was responsible for the boy’s death.
Lynch was connected to a group of pedophiles who abused children in Brentwood, authorities said. He has been in jail since May on charges of sexual abuse of a person under 18 in an unrelated case, NBC 4 reported.
Lynch was previously convicted of two sex offenses against people under 18 and was released in 2006 after serving 20 years, according to Prince George’s County Police Chief George Nader.
At a press conference last month, Nader said cold case detectives worked with a man, now in his 40s, who said Lynch victimized him for years when he was a child.
The victim told detectives that when he was 13, he killed Burdynski during a session of forced abuse at the hands of Lynch. He told detectives that Lynch then threw the boy’s body in a dumpster, according to police. The unidentified victim has not been charged, police said.
