Montgomery County Police have arrested a North Potomac teen in connection with a fatal shooting and carjacking in Gaithersburg.
Earl Deangelo Charles Jr., 18, is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence and armed carjacking, police said on Tuesday.
Charles, they allege, is responsible for the death of 32-year-old Christopher Gove on April 9, police said.
Officers that day responded to a report of a shooting shortly before 6 a.m. in the 12500 block of Carrington Hill Drive and found Gove inside a home with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Police found a shell casing in the driveway of the home and witnesses said a black vehicle was seen leaving the area. Gove’s Toyota Highlander was found about five miles from his home. The unoccupied SUV had been involved in a single-vehicle crash.
Detectives executed a search warrant on the Highlander and recovered evidence. Forensic testing determined the shell casing recovered in the driveway was linked to a gun recovered in Prince George’s County. Detectives also learned that Charles had previously been arrested during an investigation in which the firearm was recovered.
Investigators on Friday obtained an arrest warrant for Charles. He was arrested Monday in Prince George’s County and is being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit pending a bond hearing.
It was unclear on Tuesday morning if Charles had retained an attorney.
