A Montgomery County Judge has sentenced a Darnestown man to more than two years in prison for causing a vehicle crash in 2025 that led to the death of an 88-year-old woman.
Circuit Court Judge David Lease on Friday sentenced 19-year-old Liam Coskun to two years and five months in prison for his role in the May 2025 Gaithersburg crash that killed Myrtle Gottlieb, the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office said Monday in a statement.
Coskun in June pleaded guilty to the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and grossly negligent manslaughter.
Driving a 2018 Jeep Compass at about 8:30 a.m. on May 31, he struck a 2017 Toyota Corolla stopped at a red light, near westbound Sam Eig Highway and Fields Road, prosecutors said.
Gottlieb was in the front-passenger seat. She and the Corolla’s driver were hospitalized and Gottlieb died on June 4.
Coskun did not have a valid license and was intoxicated at the time of the crash. About three hours later, a breathalyzer test registered a .09, prosecutors said. Police said he was speeding shortly before the collision.
Coskun’s attorney was not immediately reached Monday afternoon for comment.
