After three people were shot and two stabbed at a chaotic Cinco de Mayo celebration in Laurel late Tuesday, police said they had charged a man with the stabbing and were searching for another man in the shooting.

Social media clips show tents filled to the brim and long lines to enter Amigos Mexican Grill for its Cinco de Mayo party. The high turnout for the event at the Centre at Laurel strip mall concerned local authorities, Laurel Police Chief Russell Hamill said at a news conference Wednesday.

“There were numerous events across the city last night that didn’t require this type of response, that didn’t require us to go into action,” Hamill said.

The worries of law enforcement were validated when two instances of violence broke out near the party. One fight began near the restaurant, prompting police to shut down the event and start dispersing the crowd.

Shortly afterward, the chief said, another fight started, leading to three people being shot.

The shooting victims, who are all adults, were transported to a hospital and were recovering Wednesday. The male suspect, though, is at large, and officials are asking for the public’s help in locating him.

In the same parking lot, police said, two adults were stabbed in what authorities called a domestic incident. Police said Wednesday they had charged Shon Juan Cook, 26, of Howard County with first-degree attempted murder and assault. The chief said Wednesday that authorities were seeking to arrest Cook.

Representatives of Amigos Mexican Grill declined to comment Wednesday. The Centre at Laurel is one of many Maryland shopping centers in real estate trust Kite Realty’s portfolio. A spokesperson for the company did not immediately respond to The Banner’s request for comment.

Prince George’s County Police and Maryland Park Police also responded to the incident.

The police chief hopes one bad night doesn’t deter people from visiting Laurel, which has some 30,000 residents and is located in Prince George’s County. He warned outsiders, though, to check their behavior before arriving.

“If you want to have fun, you want to have a good time here, you want to come to our public events, you are welcome. Everybody is welcome,” Hamill said. “If you want to do somebody harm here, you’re not welcome. If you want to come here and cause problems, you are not welcome.”

This article has been updated to reflect that Laurel Police had charged, but not arrested, the suspect in the stabbing.
