Enjoy today’s sunny weather, Maryland. Thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of the state starting Wednesday afternoon, with some lingering rain on Thursday morning.
A front from the northeast and southwest could produce thunderstorms that wash over the Baltimore region, with potential for hail and strong winds, according to the National Weather Service.
The main threat for stronger thunderstorms will be Wednesday afternoon, said Jeremy Geiger, a meteorologist for the weather service’s Baltimore/Washington office. The prime window for thunderstorms will be during 4-8 p.m., Geiger said.
Showers and patchy fog will continue Thursday morning. There’s some chance of rain throughout the day and into the evening, though it will be less likely.
The weather will be sunny again on Friday, with highs in the upper 70s and 80s throughout the weekend.
Springtime started with a warm stint, with near-record highs this week and low temperatures fit for mid-June, according to the weather service.
This spring is expected to see above-average temperatures across the U.S, according to the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center, and the seasonal precipitation outlook for Maryland is above normal.
Weather in springtime is naturally volatile, often “the most violent weather of the year,” said Lars Peter Riishojgaard, the director of the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center at the University of Maryland. But the warming of the atmosphere due to greenhouse emissions is fueling extreme weather.
