A strong cold front could bring showers and damaging thunderstorms across Maryland on Wednesday, putting parts of the state under a flood watch.
The storms are the result of a northern front interacting with a very humid air mass. Marylanders should expect multiple waves of showers and thunderstorms starting later this morning through the evening, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast for average rainfall is about half an inch.
Some areas of Central Maryland could get as much as 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, said Dan Hofmann, a meteorologist for the weather service’s Baltimore/Washington office. The weather service issued a hazardous weather outlook for Central Maryland due to damaging wind gusts.
Parts of Western Maryland, including Garrett and Allegany counties, are under flood watch and warnings until the afternoon. Last May, 200 people had to evacuate the tiny mountain town of Westernport in Allegany County due to flooding. Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency at the time.
Showers and thunderstorms should be in and out throughout the day, Hofmann said, with a break of dry weather for a couple of hours before the next wave of rain.
Evening commutes could be impacted by the storm, Hoffman said.
