‘Active pattern’ of afternoon thunderstorms looms over Maryland

• Biggest threat is potentially damaging wind gusts 60 to 70 mph during thunderstorms.
• Possible hazard with isolated instances of flash flooding in some areas.
• Today: High temperatures in the low 90s, with a slight chance of showers in the evening. The temperature will return to the mid-70s at night.
• Tuesday and Wednesday: Hot, humid conditions continue with highs in the 90s, but it will feel warmer than the actual temperature. More showers are possible throughout the week.

An ‘active pattern’ of afternoon showers

How severe storms will be in Maryland largely depends on ongoing storms across Pennsylvania, northern Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. The National Weather Service described the forecast as an “active pattern.”

The evolution of those storms and how they move east will be a wild-card influence around Baltimore and the capital region. While the possibility of thunderstorms exists, there’s a chance the area escapes thunderstorms and merely endures the heat and humidity.
