Flood watch issued as severe storms threaten parts of Maryland

Multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms are expected to hit Central Maryland late Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service issued a hazardous weather outlook for much of the region, including Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

There could be severe weather later this afternoon after the showers moving into Western Maryland make their way into Baltimore County, said Cody Ledbetter, a meteorologist for the weather service. Thunderstorms could develop between 1 and 5 p.m., Ledbetter said.

A flood watch is in effect from 8 a.m. through Tuesday evening for Baltimore City and most of Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard and Harford counties. Rainfall could amount to 1.5 inches, with some areas seeing up to 3 inches of rain. Excessive rainfall could result in flash flooding in creeks, streams and urban areas.

Temperatures will hover in the mid-80s through the week with lows in the lower 70s.

In July 2016, a massive flood overwhelmed Old Ellicott City in Howard County with 6 inches of stormwater, killing two people.
