Low-grade tornado touched down in Baltimore, Dundalk during Monday’s storms

A low-grade tornado hit Baltimore, then Dundalk, late Monday afternoon amid heavy winds and rainfall, weather officials confirmed Wednesday.

The winds peaked at 65 mph, making it an EF-0, and the tornado traveled 2 miles from the Port of Baltimore to Dundalk, according to the National Weather Service.

Video shows a waterspout forming over the Patapsco River, then moving toward the Seagirt Marine Terminal, officials said. The waterspout became tornadic when it came ashore and moved toward Broening Highway, where weather officials said a large tree was uprooted and another snapped.

The tornado moved east to Dundalk, with surveyors noting winds strong enough to move a vehicle along Sollers Point Road, uproot a tree and rip the awning from an apartment building.

The tornado lasted from 4:39-4:45 p.m.

It came amid a brief tornado warning that was issued around 4:20 p.m.

At the same time, about 20 minutes from where the tornado was swirling, thousands of fans of the supergroup BTS were taking shelter ahead of the first of two concerts this week at M&T Bank Stadium.

“We are grateful that there were no reports of injuries, and I want to thank our first responders, emergency management teams and Department of Public Works and Transportation crews who responded quickly during and after the storm,” Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier said in a statement.

Weeks earlier, five tornadoes touched down across Maryland. Two EF-1 tornadoes with 100 mph winds and an EF-0 tornado with 85 mph winds hit Anne Arundel County on July 27. That same day, Talbot County was hit with EF-1 and EF-0 tornadoes. No injuries were reported from any of the tornadoes.
