It was nice while it lasted. Saturday’s breezy, sunny spring weather in the 70s is giving way to a run of much cooler weather for the next few days.
The weather is turning so cold — thanks to a pair of cold fronts sweeping through — that the National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for parts of central Maryland west of Interstate 95 for Monday night into Tuesday morning.
There’s a greater than 50% chance that temperatures will dip below 32 degrees that night.
Since this spring has generally been warm and the freeze watch is about 10 days later than the typical last freeze, the effects could be “rather impactful,” according to the weather service.
The late frost could “kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service cautions.
It’s a sharp change from Saturday, when the high temperature recorded at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood International Airport was 75 degrees, about seven degrees above normal. And an even bigger drop from record-breaking temperatures in the 90s last week.
So far in April, the average high temperature has been 73.7 degrees.
Here’s how the forecast is shaping up for Baltimore over the next several days, according to the National Weather Service.
- Sunday: Early showers turn to cloudy skies, with winds gusting up to 29 mph. Winds calm in the evening. High of 57 degrees.
- Monday: Sunny with winds gusting up to 22 mph, high near 53 and evening low around 36.
- Tuesday: Sunny and calm with a high near 58, and a slight chance of overnight showers. Low around 49.
- Wednesday: Warmer weather returns with a high of 71 and a chance of showers. Low around 54.
