Strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds could hit the Greater Baltimore region starting around 2 p.m. Monday.

The storms will wash over Western Maryland first, then move east, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service’s Storm Prediction Center put the Baltimore region under a slight risk of severe weather, with a low chance of tornadoes Monday afternoon.

Winds could reach 60 mph, said Samantha Timmers, a meteorologist for the weather service’s Baltimore/Washington office. She said there’s a 15% to 29% chance of severe winds starting at 2 p.m. through the early evening.

Isolated large hail and a brief tornado threat could also happen Monday afternoon, but the chances are much lower, Timmers said.
