The Baltimore Banner has been named one of 11 Sustaining News Businesses in LION Publishers’ updated maturity model for independent news publishers. The designation was recently announced during the 2026 LION Sustainability Awards at the Independent News Sustainability Summit in San Diego.
The Sustaining designation recognizes news businesses that have established strong operational and financial foundations and are positioned to navigate challenges and pursue new opportunities. Since launching in 2022, The Banner has grown into Maryland’s largest newsroom while building a nonprofit model supported by subscribers, donors and client partnerships comprising a mix of advertising, sponsorships and event revenue.
“Building an organization that can serve its community for the long term has been part of The Banner’s mission from the beginning,” said Sarah Walton, The Banner’s chief philanthropy officer. “This recognition belongs to our entire team and to the subscribers, donors and partners who believe in the importance of strong local journalism.”
