Anthony G. Brown was elected attorney general in 2022 and is seeking re-election.
A Harvard-educated lawyer, Brown began his political career in the House of Delegates, representing a Prince George’s County district for eight years.
He then served as lieutenant governor under Gov. Martin O’Malley for two terms, from 2007 through 2015. He made an unsuccessful run for governor in 2014.
Brown pivoted and won a seat in Congress, representing a district covering parts of Prince George’s and Anne Arundel County from 2017 through 2023.
As attorney general, Brown has been engaged in numerous lawsuits against President Donald Trump’s administration — sometimes as the lead attorney and other times supporting a coalition of Democratic attorneys general.
Brown’s office has been reviewing three dozen cases where people died in police encounters, after an audit raised questions about the medical examiner reports that often classified the deaths as accidental or natural causes.
During Brown’s tenure, the Office of the Attorney General finished a multi-year grand jury investigation into abuse within the Archdiocese of Baltimore, releasing a report in 2023.
