The Washington Capitals may be awaiting word on whether Alexander Ovechkin plans to return, but they arenβt sitting still.
The Capitals traded for dynamic St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou on Tuesday.
The Blues receive 25-year-old center Connor McMichael, prospect center Milton GΓ€strin and Washingtonβs first-round pick (16th overall) in this weekβs NHL Draft (the Capitals still have the No. 18 pick, acquired from Anaheim in the John Carlson trade.)
Kyrou, 28, has scored 30 goals three times and was an All-Star in 2022.
He is under contract until the 2030-31 season with a cap hit of $8.125 million.
Kyrouβs ice time dropped to just 15:44 per game last season, and his name began appearing in trade rumors as he finished with 46 points and his lowest points/60 minutes since he became an NHL regular.
The Capitals are hoping a change of scenery will revitalize Kyrou.
At the NHL trade deadline in March, the Capitals traded veteran defenseman Carlson and center Nic Dowd, but are retooling for another playoff push rather than rebuilding.
βWe are thrilled to acquire Jordan and welcome him to our team,β Capitals general manager Chris Patrick said in a statement. βJordan is an exceptionally talented and dynamic offensive player who will make an immediate impact on our club. His skill, creativity, and ability to generate offense at an elite level will be a tremendous addition to our group. At just 28 years old and under contract for the next five seasons, Jordan is entering the prime years of his career. We believe he is an ideal fit for our team both now and for the long term.β
McMichael scored 14 goals and had 32 assists last season.
GΓ€strin, the Capitalsβ 2025 second-round pick, plays in Sweden.
