It was 30 years ago Friday that a kid named Jeffrey Maier became a New York hero and a Baltimore villain. He reached over the right-field wall at old Yankee Stadium and turned a potential out into a game-tying eighth-inning home run for the Yankees in the first game of the 1996 American League Championship Series.
What could’ve been, only if umpire Rich Garcia had ruled fan interference rather than a home run for Derek Jeter.
If there was a shiver down your spine in Wednesday night’s Yankees game against the Tampa Bay Rays in the third game of the American League Division Series, you’re forgiven. It was uncanny, how similar — a game-tying home run for a Yankees infielder, this time Anthony Volpe in the sixth inning.
Except, in those 30 years, video replay review has become a thing. And if it had been available in 1996 (Major League Baseball didn’t institute replay reviews until 2008), the Maier incident would have been overturned and maybe, just maybe, the Orioles would’ve won that game.
Garcia, the umpire, later admitted he got the call wrong.
“Nobody feels worse than I do,” Garcia said in 1996. “I had never had a controversial call in a postseason game. It hurts.”
Even at that early juncture in the seven-game series, the home run call felt like a pivotal moment.
“Meanwhile, here’s the kid receiving congratulations all around,” announcer Bob Costas said on the NBC broadcast. “He’s affected, possibly, the outcome of the game. Certainly he’s affected the course of the game.”
“And maybe the series, Bob,” commentator Bob Uecker chimed in. “Maybe the championship series.”
The Yankees won the series 4-1, but the first four games were all close, with Orioles pitchers surrendering runs late in Games 1, 3 and 4.
It’s all ancient history now, but it was no less poignant when a lengthy replay review Wednesday at Yankee Stadium ruled that a Yankees fan reached over the left-field wall to pull across Anthony Volpe’s hit.
The replay review judged that Volpe’s hit wouldn’t have been caught by Victor Mesa Jr., but the fan interference turned the game-tying knock into an RBI double. Then former Orioles right-hander Bryan Baker earned the save to eliminate the Yankees.
The moment wasn’t missed by Orioles fans on social media.
On X, Orioles fan Eric Arditti wrote, “Now you get the call right.” He hasn’t forgotten.
Added Cal Perry, the former Orioles senior vice president and chief content officer: “Jeffrey Maier. That’s the tweet. I see you Os nation. I see you.”
Even the Durham Bulls quipped: “Jeffrey Maier 2.0 has entered the chat.”
FanGraphs writer Michael Baumann, however, might’ve said it best over on BlueSky.
“If you’re old enough to compare this play to the Jeffrey Maier play, you should schedule a colonoscopy,” Baumann wrote.
That may be a better outcome than rewatching the Maier play, at least.
