Trey Mancini will retire as an Oriole, signing a 1-day contract

Trey Mancini will end his career as an Oriole.

The beloved first baseman and the Orioles announced Friday that Mancini will sign a one-day contract Sept. 19 to conclude his career in Baltimore. Mancini announced his retirement from baseball earlier this month.

There will be a special ticket package for fans to honor Mancini, and a pregame ceremony will celebrate Mancini’s career.

Even without the one-day contract, Mancini will always be most recognizable as an Oriole. He debuted in 2016 and was a major part of the team until he was traded to the Houston Astros during the 2022 season.

Mancini won a World Series with Houston before joining the Chicago Cubs in 2023. Various comeback attempts after that fell short — until June, when Mancini returned to the majors with the Los Angeles Angels. He played five games for them, recording three hits in his first appearance. What made that more special was that his wife, Sara, and daughter, Sadie, were in the stands for it.

Mancini was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2020 and declared cancer-free later that year. He credits the Orioles’ medical team with helping to save his life through bloodwork conducted at spring training. During Mancini’s battle with cancer, the Orioles began a “F16HT” campaign — referencing his No. 16 — which raised money for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, with proceeds exceeding $80,000.

Fans can purchase a special ticket package to honor Mancini at the Orioles’ Sept. 19 game. The package includes a hat with the “F16HT” logo and supports the Trey Mancini Foundation, which helps people facing food insecurity, illness and other hardships.

Since 2020, a “F16HT” sign has hung in the Orioles dugout near the steps to the clubhouse. That sign will be relocated to the club level at Camden Yards. In its place will be a new, permanent sign in the dugout. The pregame ceremony will include Mancini’s former teammates, as well as coaches, staff members and medical professionals.
