NEW YORK — The latest update in Orioles infielder Jordan Westburg’s recovery is not a promising one.

Westburg has been shut down from baseball activities and will undergo a re-evaluation of his elbow after he felt discomfort during the ramp-up of his throwing program, manager Craig Albernaz said. Westburg had been throwing in Sarasota, Florida, as part of his recovery from a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.

Westburg received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his elbow in February rather than undergoing surgery. The re-evaluation process could, in theory, show that surgery is necessary. But that would be on the extreme end of possibilities.

Westburg has dealt with multiple injuries in his major league career, and this is another troubling setback. When he entered spring training, Westburg dealt with an oblique strain. As he underwent rehab for the oblique injury in February, he reported elbow discomfort to the training staff. Imaging revealed a partial tear of the UCL that appeared to have been there for an extended period, president of baseball operations Mike Elias said at the time.

Last year, Westburg was held to 85 games by a hamstring strain and ankle sprain. He hit .265 with a .770 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

Westburg’s update was one of several for the Orioles on Monday ahead of the series finale against the New York Yankees.

Infielder Jackson Holliday, whose recovery from hamate bone surgery has been anything but smooth, will head to Double-A Chesapeake on Tuesday, where he will participate in a live batting practice session. If Holliday’s baseball activities go well this week, Albernaz said he will begin a rehab assignment in Double-A at the end of the week.

Right-hander Ryan Helsley, who is on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation but whose MRI came back clean, will be re-evaluated this week before he begins a throwing program.

In the meantime, the Orioles added bullpen help. They signed right-hander Lou Trivino to a major league contract. Trivino joins Baltimore in New York, and the club optioned right-hander Trey Gibson to Triple-A Norfolk after he made his debut Sunday.

Trivino, 34, exercised the May 1 opt-out of his minor league deal with the Phillies. In Triple-A this year, he struck out 20 of 56 batters faced while issuing four walks. He allowed four earned runs in 13 innings.

Albernaz said Trivino brings a “veteran presence to the ‘pen.” He likes Trivino’s sinker and the way he attacks hitters. “He’s throwing the ball extremely well and the velo is there, so we’re excited to have him.”

In addition, right-hander Albert Suárez cleared waivers and accepted an assignment with Triple-A Norfolk.
