CHICAGO — Orioles left-hander Dietrich Enns required a trip to the hospital while the club was in Pittsburgh to receive IV of antibiotics to treat a foot infection, manager Craig Albernaz said.
Baltimore placed Enns on the 15-day injured list Monday due to the infection, and that allowed the team to promote right-hander Brandon Young as an injury replacement. Young will start tonight’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
But the infection for Enns is an odd — and concerning — development.
“It’s swollen pretty good,” Albernaz said, “so yesterday he went to the hospital and got some IVs with antibiotics. It’s crazy. I’m not sure what happened. But his foot is pretty gnarly.”
Enns is the latest pitcher to reach the injured list, although his ailment doesn’t appear to be pitching-related. Right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right shoulder inflammation. And last week, right-hander Zach Eflin’s elbow discomfort prompted an injured list designation and will require a second opinion of his MRI by Dr. Keith Meister in Texas on Tuesday.
Before opening day, right-hander Andrew Kittredge dealt with shoulder inflammation as well. He pitched his second game of a rehab assignment with the Norfolk Tides on Sunday.
Left-hander Keegan Akin is dealing with a left groin strain, and right-hander Colin Selby is on the 60-day injured list with shoulder inflammation.
Enns’ malady is yet another test of Baltimore’s pitching depth. And in Chicago, the Orioles only have one left-hander available in the bullpen: Grant Wolfram.
Albernaz said he wasn’t concerned about having only one southpaw, though, because he feels the rest of his relievers are fairly adept at facing hitters of either handedness.
“They have weapons to do that,” Albernaz said. “It’s going to be challenging to maneuver just one lefty, but we trust our other guys to get the opposite-handed hitters out.”
Left-hander Cade Povich won’t be available immediately, considering he threw 5 2/3 innings in relief Sunday, but Albernaz didn’t close the door on him being used in a long relief role in the future. On Sunday, Povich said he’s open to anything for the team, and Albernaz said the Orioles are keeping “everything on the table.”
