The Orioles and Nationals swapped minor league players in a need-for-need trade.

The Orioles acquired outfielder Christian Franklin and traded right-hander Joe Glassey to the Nationals, multiple sources said. Glassey’s addition was first reported by The Athletic.

Baltimore will need to add Franklin to their 40-man roster, but that should not be an issue, considering the Orioles have traded away multiple players on deadline day. Franklin projects as a depth outfielder with the ability to play all three spots. He’s a right-handed bat with strong on-base skills in Triple-A. This year, Franklin has a .249 average and .735 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. He’s also a stolen base threat.

The Nationals are receiving Glassey, a 25-year-old reliever in Double-A. Washington needs pitching, and Glassey is a young, controllable arm.

Glassey recently reached Double-A, pitching two scoreless outings. At High-A Frederick, Glassey had a 2.86 ERA with a massive 15.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Should the Orioles need, Franklin could be a useful outfielder in terms of defense and on-base skills. Franklin played with former Orioles first-round pick Heston Kjerstad at Arkansas.

Without Taylor Ward in the system, Franklin is one option to backfill. So, too, is Kjerstad, who is .276 for Triple-A Norfolk this year. Outfield prospect Enrique Bradfield Jr. is also an option.
