Ahead of the Nationals’ homer opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team announced another way for Nationals fans in the DMV to watch games this season.
The Nationals are partnering with Fox 5 DC to distribute 10 Nationals games throughout the year; the first simulcast will be on Friday, April 17, against the San Francisco Giants.
In addition, the Nationals will broadcast three games each month in May, July and August.
The Nationals announced that on opening day fans could watch their games on five cable channels in addition to the streaming service Fubo or buy a $99.99 subscription to watch through Nationals.TV.
Some fans expressed frustration because they had purchased the subscription with opening day around the corner, fearing they wouldn’t be able to watch through their cable networks. In a story in The Athletic, others complained that they couldn’t watch the games on those channels.
This season, the Nationals changed broadcasters, leaving MASN after a contentious two-decade period with the Orioles. As part of MLB’s move to relocate the Expos to D.C., the Nationals’ broadcast rights were awarded to the Orioles in perpetuity, and Baltimore controlled a majority stake in the network that aired both teams’ games.
Last year the teams reached an agreement to terminate the deal. The Nationals gave up their minority stake in MASN. In return, they gained the right to market their games to any broadcast partner.
The Nationals are now partnering with MLB, who distributes and broadcasts games for the Nationals and nearly half of the league’s teams.
The Fox 5 simulcasts will feature the Nationals.TV crew of play-by-play announcer Dan Kolko, analyst Kevin Frandsen and host and reporter Alexa Datt.
