CLEVELAND, OHIO – Trailing 2-0 in the first half against a team which has spent most of the year ranked No. 1 in the nation, Baltimore’s No. 1 boys soccer team, Calvert Hall, stormed back for four unanswered goals and the Cardinals defeated St. Ignatius Academy (OH), 4-2, Saturday afternoon in Cleveland.
Senior Gabe Glikin broke a 2-2 tie with a goal, with just 8:32 to play, to give Calvert Hall the lead and senior Tyler Flynn iced it for the Cardinals when he scored his team’s fourth goal, with four minutes remaining.
St. Ignatius, which has spent most of the year as the nation’s top-ranked team, before a recent loss dropped it to No. 3, put Calvert Hall on its heals early, as senior Zsombor Onodi scored two first half goals. Just 22 seconds after the second Ignatius goal, however, Ben Madore struck the back of the net to seize a little momentum back for the Cardinals, as they trailed 2-1 at the half.
Madore then scored the tying goal with 11:22 remaining in the second half and the Cardinals took control from there.
Calvert Hall, which has risen to No. 2 in the nation, is now 14-0-1 as it prepares to return to MIAA A Conference action where it is seeking to lock down the top seed for the playoffs and defend the title it won last fall.
