Mount St. Joseph senior wrestler Coleman Nogle said, in a recent interview, he wanted to savor every moment of his final high school season. On Sunday, at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware, Nogle enjoyed one of the greatest moments of his high school career, reaching the finals of the Beast of the East wrestling tournament.
The tournament is considered one of the five most difficult in-season tournaments in the country. Upsets are not uncommon while navigating this gauntlet. Nogle came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Gael is the No. 1 126-lber in Maryland and the No. 15 wrestler in the country.
Nogle avoided any pitfalls en route to the finals, where he would face the top-seeded Tyler Ferrara (Chenango Forks, NY). In the quarterfinals and semis, Nogle registered 5-1 decisions over No. 7 seeded Jackson Young (Camden Catholic, NJ) and No. 6 seed Austin McBurney (Massillon Perry, OH), respectively. In his other three bouts, Nogle posted a decision, a major-decision, and a fall.
Despite being unranked nationally, Ferrara’s two state titles earned him the higher seed. The three-time state finalist proved his seed to be correct as he methodically controlled a close match, pocketing a 3-1 decision over the Gael. Nogle was fourth here last year and is a state champion and state runner-up.
“I was honored to be able to wrestle in the finals of such an elite tournament like the Beast,” Nogle said. “Although it didn’t end how I wanted it to, my performance at the tournament improved each year, and I am proud of my showing this year. I felt great and I wrestled my match every time. Overall, the team did well, and it was a fun experience.”
Also powering St. Joe’s eighth place showing (113.5 points) was Coleman’s brother, Carter (No. 1 in MD, No. 17 in the nation), who placed fourth at 126 lbs. Carter was a state champion last year and placed fifth at last year’s Beast. The third-seeded Carter reached the semifinals but came up just short against the No. 2 seed, Dan Jones (Delbarton, NJ), 7-5.
The junior bounced back to reach the bronze medal match, where he would see the No. 4 seed, Gauge Botero (Faith Christian Academy, PA). Botero, who is No. 13 in the national rankings, proved the national rankings to be more accurate as he posted an 8-4 decision over Nogle to earn bronze.
No. 1 Bryce Phillips (215) was seeded No. 2 based off his fifth place showing here last year and subsequent state title. While the junior was able to improve upon his placing, he did absorb an upset in the semis against the No. 3 seed, Hudson Skove (Rumson – Fair Haven Regional, NJ), dropping a 6-3 decision.
Phillips came back to capture bronze with a 3-1 win over 4th seeded Max Vanadia (Brecksville, OH). Vanadia sits at No. 20 in the national rankings.
No. 1 Gavin Bage (285) was given the 5th seed and he renewed his rivalry with No. 3 Luke Randazzo (Loyola, 7th seed) in the seventh-place match. Bage defeated the Don for the third straight time, 7-2. It was their first meeting to go the distance. Randazzo won the first showdown by fall in a dual meet, Bage returned the favor at the MIAA and state tournaments.
No. 5 Ben Smith (157) was one win from placing, losing in the blood round. Three other local wrestlers dropped blood round matches, No. 1 Judah Aybar (Loyola, 144), Sean Garretson (120, No. 2 at 113), and No. 2 Tyson Sherlock (132).
Aybar was the No. 1 seed at 144 and Sherlock the No. 2 seed at 132. Despite missing Blair Academy and most of Wyoming Seminary’s top guys, this field was still not for the weak of heart. St. Mary’s-Ryken’s No.2 Clayton Gabrielson was awarded the No. 2 seed at 144, and he too fell in the blood round. Gabrielson’s teammate, and state champion at McDonogh last year, Gerrard Johnson also came up one win shy of reaching the podium.
Gilman’s No. 5 Emmitt Sherlock reached the semis at 138, where he dropped a tough 5-4 decision to top-seeded Tyler Vazquez (Delbarton, No. 4 in the country). Unfortunately for Sherlock, he would not taste victory again, dropping his consolation semi match and then falling in overtime in the fifth-place bout to Chase Hontz (Faith Christian Academy), 6-4. The Greyhounds finished in 19th place with 64.5 points.
Landon’s state champion, No. 3 Joel Brown, was unseeded despite his No. 20 ranking in the country. Brown shined on his way to a fourth-place finish, defeating Emmitt Sherlock, 3-1, in the consolation semis.
No. 1 Mekhi Neal reached the 150lb finals for St. Mary’s-Ryken. The No. 3 seed beat the second seed, Keagan Judd (Sherando, VA), 6-2, in his semi-final match. Neal gave the top seed, Vince Bouzakis (Notre Dame, PA – No. 11 at 138 nationally), all he could handle before dropping a hard fought 9-7 decision.
