Just two days before the start of training camp, the Commanders fired tight ends coach Ben Steele, who was arrested in June on allegations of driving while intoxicated and other infractions, according to court records.

Steele was arrested on June 7 in Loudoun County, Virginia, where the team’s facility is located. He was charged with DWI and refusing to submit to a blood or breath test.

He is also charged with resisting arrest, according to court documents.

Steele’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Commanders, who did not disclose a reason for Steele’s dismissal, said in a statement that the team “will have no further comment at this time.”

Driving while intoxicated, refusing a blood test and resisting arrest are Class 1 misdemeanors in Virginia. They carry up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. A first-time DWI offense could also lead to a license suspension for a year.

Steele was just hired by Washington in March after he spent the last two seasons with the Cardinals. He has been an NFL coach since 2014, when he was an offensive quality control coach in Tampa Bay.

The Commanders start training camp on July 29. Steele’s hearing is scheduled for Aug. 13 in Loudoun County District Court.
