Commanders’ secondary takes a hit as Trey Amos goes on PUP list ahead of training camp

The Commanders’ much-discussed secondary took a hit before training camp even began.

Cornerback Trey Amos, who was expected to compete for a starting role, was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list Saturday. He was joined by defensive linemen Dorance Armstrong and Deatrich Wise Jr.

The Commanders also placed cornerback Fred Davis II, an undrafted free agent out of Northwestern, on the active/non-football illness list.

Players on the PUP list can participate in team activities during training camp except for practice. They can be activated once they are medically cleared.

As a rookie, Amos played 10 games before fracturing his fibula during the team’s Week 10 loss to the Detroit Lions. He was placed on injured reserve and did not return to the field during the regular season.

Amos figured to be a key part of Washington’s secondary. After the Commanders allowed 242 passing yards per game in 2025 — fourth worst in the league — general manager Adam Peters tried to remake the back end of the defense.

He signed Nick Cross at safety and Amik Robertson and Rasul Douglas at corner. But Peters was also banking on younger players — including Amos and Mike Sainristil — to make a leap.

Amos was a second-round pick in 2025. His rookie season was up and down. He graded 82nd of 114 eligible corners, according to Pro Football Focus. But Washington felt Amos’s second year in the NFL would pay dividends.

Behind Amos, Washington doesn’t have much depth at corner. Douglas just signed after minicamp, and Robertson will likely line up in the slot. But after him the Commanders will be searching for other options in training camp.

Washington spent most of its offseason resources beefing up depth at pass rusher and wide receiver, hoping the secondary would hold firm with just a few additions.

Armstrong and Wise, who both suffered season-ending injuries in 2025, were mostly projected as depth pieces. Armstrong figured to play behind the newly acquired Odafe Oweh, and Wise was behind K’Lavon Chaisson, Charles Omenihu and others.

Washington opens training camp next week in Ashburn, Virginia, with the season opener set for Sept. 13 in Philadelphia.
