Old Mill recognized its football seniors before Friday evening’s contest against Broadneck.

Unfortunately, it was the only highlight for the Patriots. No. 9 Broadneck flexed on the hosts, 49-0, in an Anne Arundel County contest in Millersville.

Senior quarterback Cam Catterton threw for three scores and rushed for another for the Bruins (7-1), who took a major step towards a second straight Anne Arundel title. Broadneck (6-0 Anne Arundel) is tied for first with Arundel (5-0) heading into the final week of regular season play.

“It felt great. Personally, this is my first time actually beating Old Mill, so this one meant a lot to me,” said Catterton, a 6-foot-2 transfer from South River. “Once we got the run game going, I felt like they (Old Mill) couldn’t stop us because they had to play the run. If not, we would have kept dashing them. Once they came up and started playing thighter defense, we started hitting them with deeper passes for touchdown.”

Catterton’s 24-yard strike to Eli Harris towards the end of the first quarter was the beginning of Broadneck’s onslaught. The Bruins tacked on four touchdowns in the second quarter for a 35-0 advantage and a running clock in the second half.

Using a misdirection trick play early in the second, Logan McGill launched a 63-yarder to Joseph Smargissi for a touchdown. Catterton and Machi Evans rushed for seven and five-yard scores, respectively, and Smargissi flashed across the middle for a 14-yard touchdown reception from Catterton.

Catterton opened the second half with a 70-yard bomb to Eli Harris. Anthony Hawkins had two interceptions for the Bruins’ defense which posted its third straight shutout.

Broadneck has won seven straight since losing its season opener at No. 2 Archbishop Spalding (38-3). The Bruins have only allowed 39 points (four shutouts) during its seven-game run.

Broadneck coach Rob Harris said taking care of the ball and stopping Old Mill’s running game was key Friday.

“The kids had a great week of practice. We challenged them to recenter and refocus, they had a great week and the results paid off tonight,” said Harris. “I thought we mixed the pass and run very well and I think we kept them off balance.”

From turnovers to penalties to mental mistakes, everything went wrong for Old Mill (5-3, 5-2 Anne Arundel) Friday.

“Broadneck played a well-rounded game and we did not play well on the three phases – offense, defense and special teams. We got a lot of work to do,” Patriots coach Mike Pfisterer said. “We just had self-inflicted wounds. We had penalties, we had false starts, we had personal fouls, we just never were able to maintain any momentum.”
