In 2025, Montgomery County businesses attracted $1.8 billion across 110 deals in venture capital, private equity, and corporate expansion commitments, fueling the County’s position as a top destination for companies in high-growth industries, including Life Sciences, Advanced Technology, Satellite & Advanced Communications, and more.
Even as national investment levels showed signs of volatility, local companies continued to attract investors and expand in the County. Venture capital accounted for the majority of funding, with local companies raising approximately $1.45 billion, while private equity transactions also added significant momentum. Technology companies led all sectors, drawing more than $1.5 billion in investment, followed by the life sciences industry, which secured more than $244 million.
The Montgomery County Government continued to support early-stage companies, start-ups and entrepreneurs through its own Technology Innovation and Founders Funds, which combined awarded $7.5 million in grants to 55 local companies. The programs provided early funding for startups working in areas such as biotechnology, artificial intelligence, aerospace systems, and sustainability, and were designed to help them bridge early funding gaps, particularly for founders who may face barriers to traditional sources of capital. Small businesses remain the backbone of Montgomery County’s economy, with more than 95 percent of local companies employing fewer than 50 people. “These programs demonstrate the County’s commitment to nurturing our ecosystem and building important economic pathways toward growth and mobility,” said Jared Smith, President and CEO of the Montgomery Conty Economic Development Corporation.
Several large corporate investments also anchored the County’s economic growth last year. AstraZeneca announced plans to expand its research and development footprint in Gaithersburg in addition to its new $300 million Rockville facility, while clean-energy firm X-energy advanced plans for a consolidated headquarters expected to support hundreds of jobs. Samsung Biologics announced it will be expanding its U.S. manufacturing footprint through the strategic acquisition of a facility in Rockville, and AeroVironment opened a new research and manufacturing facility in Germantown.
Together, these moves reinforced Montgomery County’s long-standing strengths in life sciences, energy innovation, and defense-related technologies, while adding hundreds of new jobs to the County. With continued investment from venture capital firms, private equity, and global companies, Montgomery County is positioned as one of the region’s most active and resilient business ecosystems.
