Will Jawando, the Democratic nominee for Montgomery county executive, will resume campaigning in the near future, his campaign said in a statement Monday night.

Jawando, 43, was hospitalized Sept. 5 after having a heart attack during a pickup basketball game and undergoing surgery to insert a stent.

“We are grateful to share that Will is recovering well from his recent heart attack and will return to the campaign trail very soon,” Nicole Rios, Jawando’s campaign manager, said in the statement. “His dedication to Montgomery County remains steadfast, and his focus is fixed on our community’s future.”

Jawando said in a video released five days after his heart attack that he be “back on track before you know it.” But some residents online have speculated that he would need more time.

Jawando is running against Republican nominee Esther Wells. Deep-blue Montgomery County typically elects Democrats.

Rios said that Jawando will not participate in any additional candidate forums before Election Day.

“Since announcing his run for Montgomery County Executive in May 2025, Will has participated in 102 meet-and-greets, as well as more than 45 candidate forums, debates, and town halls across the county,” Rios said in the statement.

It was released prior to the cancellation of an in-person media briefing planned to for Tuesday morning, before the council meeting. In an email to reporters, Jawando’s legislative aide Michael Solomon said Jawando would participate in Tuesday’s council meeting virtually.

Solomon said that Jawando “continues to make steady progress in his recovery.”

Jawando did not attend the Sept. 15 council meeting virtually or in person.
