Baltimore City Election Director Armstead Jones has been released from an area hospital after spending much of Election Day receiving medical care for an unspecified condition.

Although he did not say why he was in the hospital, Jones told The Baltimore Banner on Tuesday morning he was unwell. Election Deputy Director Abigail Goldman will oversee operations at polling places across the city in his absence.

“He has been out of the office for some personal issues for about a week now and we put everything in place ahead of today,” Goldman said.

“Everything is fine. Everything has been running smoothly. We have backup systems in case something like this happens and we need to implement them,” she added.

In a statement Tuesday evening, the board said Jones has been released from the hospital and is resting at home.

“We are looking forward to him returning to work in the near future,” the board said. “We do not expect any delay in counting ballots or reporting results due to Director Jones’s medical leave.”
