The mystery of the disappearing koi fish in Howard County
Multiple Columbia, Maryland, residents reported that their koi fish ponds, which had dozens of fish, were wiped clean of any aquatic life – something they all said has never happened their more than 20 years of owning koi fish. Residents think the fish were stolen, koi fish experts think predators ate the fish, and others aren’t so sure.
Steve Steurer is one of a group of Columbia, MD, residents who reported more than 30 koi fish had been stolen from their backyard ponds near the end of March. Steurer has had his pond for 25 years, and says nothing like this has ever happened before. He recently replaced his koi fish, and installed security cameras around his house. Neither residents nor pet store owners know if it was an animal or a human that stole them.
