    The late Mike Whittles, who took over a downtrodden Archbishop Spalding football program in 1999 and set a goal of seeing the team evolve into one capable of competing for the MIAA A Conference championship. After winning four titles in the B Conference, Whittles' final team moved up to the A Conference in 2011 and made the league playoffs. He lost a battle with Pancreatic cancer three months later, but not before achieving his goal and becoming an enduring source of inspiration for all who knew him.

    As members of the first senior class at Crofton High School, Christine Wang (8), Lily Lagaras and Emily Gustie (3) helped build the Cardinals into a state volleyball contender in just two years. Although they lost to Northern-Calvert, 3-1, in Monday’s Class 3A state semifinals, the No. 2 Cardinals took another step forward after falling in the state quarterfinals last year.

    Wildcats earn the right to play for their third consecutive state title
    Arundel’s Audrey Owens (4), Taylor Johnson (3) and Emily Liu (6) led the undefeated No. 1 Wildcats to a sweep of Bowie in the Class 4A state volleyball semifinals Monday night. Johnson had eight kills, Liu had 21 assists and Liu and Owens combined for 16 aces. The Wildcats will go for their third straight championship when they meet Urbana in the title match Wednesday night at Harford Community College.

    Lanes reopened after overturned truck halted traffic, closed schools in Anne Arundel
    The Maryland State Highway Administration and the Anne Arundel County Fire Department reported around 6 a.m. that the westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes were closed due to a tanker truck flipping on its side on the Severn River Bridge on Monday.
