A Woodlawn High School student was arrested after they engaged in a verbal argument and were later found with a loaded gun on Wednesday morning, officials said.
Officers were called to the school around 10 a.m. for a potential fight, according to a news release from the Baltimore County Police Department. In an email to the school community, Principal Yalonda Booker said the fight was verbal, not physical, and staff at the school were able to separate the students.
Shortly after the fight, Booker said that the school began to receive reports that one of the students had a weapon, prompting an officer to conduct a search.
A school resource officer found the gun belonging to one of the students and confiscated it, according to the email. The student was also arrested.
The weapon never went off, and no one at the school was injured, police said.
“I want to thank our staff for their quick and appropriate response,” said Booker in the email. “The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority, and we will continue to swiftly address any behavior that puts our school community at risk.”
She added that the student will receive “serious school consequences in addition to law enforcement action.”
Baltimore County Police are investigating the incident.
