A math educator died in Arundel Elementary School in Baltimore City over the weekend, according to school officials.

“Sadly, the body of a staff member at Arundel Elementary was discovered this morning before school started,” said Sherry Christian, a spokesperson for the school system. No students were present when the body was discovered.

Baltimore Police spokesman Vernon Davis confirmed the death of a 75-year-old woman at the school and said her body showed no signs of trauma or foul play.

Her body was taken to the medical examiner’s office, which will determine her cause of death.

Deborah Tolson worked for the school system for 23 years, the last seven as an educator at Arundel, a prekindergarten through second-grade school in Cherry Hill.

She was the school’s math interventionist, helping students who were struggling with the subject.

Our hearts and thoughts remain with Ms. Tolson’s family and friends, as well as our entire school community, in this difficult time,“ wrote Kerry-Ann Malcolm, the school’s principal.

”We are still gathering additional details, and will share what we can at a later time.”

The school system did not provide any other details about Tolson’s death or when it occurred.

The principal described Tolson as a “very beloved member” and “pillar of our school community” who was popular with students and staff.

A crisis team from the school system will be at the school to answer questions and provide grief counseling.
