Amentum, an engineering and technology firm that primarily provides services to the federal government, is laying off more than 380 workers in Hanover later this year, according to two notices filed with the Maryland Department of Labor this month.

The layoffs in Anne Arundel County were triggered by “the transition of certain intelligence contracts,” Chanel Mann, a spokesperson for Amentum, said in an email.

Amentum, the second-largest services provider to the federal government, is known for its work with NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of Defense.

Based in Chantilly, Virginia, the publicly traded company was started in 2020 as a spinoff of AECOM, an infrastructure consulting firm based in Dallas, Texas.

Amentum filed both notices Aug. 18 with the state. The first notice affects 317 workers and takes effect Oct. 31. The second will impact 65 workers in November.

The company has offices in Maryland at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford County, in Annapolis Junction and Germantown, according to its website.

Amentum merged with the cyber and intelligence business of Jacobs in late 2024, which had acquired KEYW, a prominent intelligence contractor in Anne Arundel, in 2019.

Oddly, the address listed on the notices is 7710 Milestone Parkway, which is the location of a Wawa gas station and convenience store. Amentum did not respond to a question about the address.

Two other federal government contracting firms in Anne Arundel County announced layoffs earlier this year.
