Fall festivities are in full swing this week in the capital region, from spooky Halloween shows and costume contests to arts celebrations and a new pop-up flea market.

‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ at Olney Theatre
Now through Nov. 1, times vary
Spooky season has arrived at the Olney Theatre Center, where D.C.’s Synetic Theater performs its creepy, wordless adaptation of Washington Irving’s famous gothic story about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman.
Tickets range from $41-$101.
‘Hocus Pocus’ outdoor movie screening
Friday from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

Bring your own picnic blankets and lawn chairs for an outdoor screening of the witchy Disney classic “Hocus Pocus” (rated PG) at Twinbrook Quarter on Rockville Pike. Free popcorn, Halloween treats and face painting will be offered.

Waterfront Art Festival
Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Live music, river boat tours, art demos, a kids’ creative zone, food trucks, a local artist market and more are planned for Bladensburg Waterfront Park’s family-friendly outdoor art market and festival.
Entry is free.
Germantown October Fest
Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Germantown’s longstanding Oktoberfest got a makeover, focusing now on a “broader seasonal and cultural focus.” But it still clings to its original Oktoberfest roots. Hosted by BlackRock Center for the Arts and organized by the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce, the day will feature live music, a spooky dance party, a parade, carnival, business expo and food trucks featuring specials from local restaurants.

Good Booty Flea
Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

An outdoor market arrives in new Prince George’s County community Konterra. Guests can shop vintage clothing, art, handmade goods and more, curated by some of the area’s top vintage and artisan shops, including Vintage Vintage Vintage, Bmore Flea, Get Flee Marketplace, Street Market Gallery and Shop Made in DC. Live music and food trucks will also be on site.
Entry is free.
A Halloween fun run
Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
What’s scarier than running? The Montgomery Village Foundation is celebrating Halloween early with a Jack-O-Lantern 5K and 1-mile fun run at Lake Marion Community Center. Prizes will be given to the top three men and women in each age group, as well as those wearing the best costumes.
Tickets range from $15 to $40.
Dissonance Dance Theatre at Publick Playhouse
Saturday at 7 p.m.; Sunday at 4 p.m.
D.C.-based dance troupe Dissonance Dance Theatre — one of the most prominent Black-led contemporary ballet companies in the country — celebrates its 20th anniversary at the Publick Playhouse in Hyattsville this month with “Through the Dark, the Light Beckons.” The original performance chronicles the African American experience with music from Earth, Wind & Fire; Nancy Wilson; October London; Angélique Kidjo and Hans Zimmer.
Tickets range from $20-$25.
