7 things to do in the capital region this weekend: Free festivals galore

There’s a festival for everyone this weekend.

Across the capital region, lovers of music, fitness, food, beer and arts can get their fixes at events designed to bring communities together.

Here’s what’s going on this weekend in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties.

Family Health and Fitness Day

Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Interactive fitness classes, sports games, nutrition activities, giveaways, local vendors and more are scheduled to join a free day of exercise and wellness at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.

Entry is free.

Rocktobierfest

Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Raise a pint to Rockville’s sister city, Pinneberg, Germany, at Rockville Town Center for an Oktoberfest celebration featuring live music, food, locally brewed beer, local merchants and activities for kids.

Entry is free.

Greenbelt Blues Festival

Saturday from 11 a.m.-11 p.m.

The 23rd annual Greenbelt Blues Festival brings a full day of music, dancing and yoga to the Roosevelt Center and New Deal Cafe. Organizers suggest guests bring their own festival chairs and yoga mats. Food and beverages will be sold at nearby restaurants.

Entry and parking are free.

Maryland African Restaurant Week Festival

Saturday from noon-7 p.m.

Maryland African Restaurant Week culminates in a festival celebrating the best of local African restaurants at Goodwin Park in Seat Pleasant. Expect live music and DJ performances, local vendors, restaurants representing cultures across the African diaspora and a jollof cook-off where attendees can cast votes for their favorites.

Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival

Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Kick the morning off by joining or watching the Wheaton Arts Parade, in which participants’ only requirement is to bring some form of art to showcase. Across the festival, taking place mainly around the intersection of Grandview Avenue and Reedie Drive in Wheaton, guests can peruse art galleries, learn about Montgomery County initiatives, watch live entertainment, purchase food and drink, and enjoy free face painting and balloon twisting for kids.

Takoma Park Folk Festival

Sunday from 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

The family-friendly music and arts festival, located at Takoma Park Middle School, offers a slew of musical performers across seven stages, plus a juried craft show, artisans’ works for sale, community organization tables, food vendors, and a children’s nook with face paint and kid-friendly tunes.

Entry is free. Free shuttles from nearby parking lots will also be available.

Taste of Rio Festival

Sunday from 2-6 p.m.

Following Taste of Rio Restaurant Week, the area celebrates its dining scene along the Rio boardwalk with bites and sips from local spots including Guapo’s, Kareem’s Lebanese Kitchen, True Food Kitchen and Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls.

Entry and entertainment are free; tasting tickets are sold in $5 increments online and in person via credit card only.
