Soup dumplings have docked at National Harbor.

Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings, which first opened in New York as Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao in 2006, is expanding its footprint across the Northeast and beyond. Its Oxon Hill outpost has been in a soft opening phase since late June and will have a grand opening on July 22, according to a news release.

The first Maryland location opened in Bethesda’s Montgomery Mall in October. Another shopping center location is scheduled to open this year at The Mall in Columbia.

The eatery earned a recommendation from Michelin, the prestigious French dining guide, from 2009-17. It specializes in the namesake little steamed buns that originated in Nan Xiang, a town outside of Shanghai.

Diners during the early days of operation at Montgomery Mall cited long wait times. But early online reviews during National Harbor’s soft opening have been largely positive about the quality of food and efficiency of service.

On a November visit by The Banner, some highlights included the scallion pancake and Shanghai-style pork buns, which were both solid offerings from the expansive menu of Chinese cuisine.

But Nan Xiang’s standout and signature dish is a Lucky Six selection of the signature soup dumplings. All are filled with a blend usually bound by ground pork.

The best versions of these steamed delicacies on that visit were the seafood options: scallop and pork, crabmeat and pork topped with a fleck of crab roe, and a grass-green dumpling filled with a mixture of gourd luffa, shrimp and pork.

Nan Xiang is located at 180 American Way in National Harbor and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
