Baltimore native André De Shields has a chance to win his second Tony Award in seven years.

The 80-year-old actor was nominated for best featured actor in a musical on Tuesday morning for his turn as Old Deuteronomy in the Broadway hit “Cats: The Jellicle Ball.” De Shields won the same category in 2019 for his role as Hermes in “Hadestown.”

The Baltimore City College alum’s competition for one of theater’s most prestigious prizes includes Ali Louis Bourzgui (“The Lost Boys”), Bryce Pinkham (“Chess”), Ben Levi Ross (“Ragtime”) and Layton Williams (“Titaníque”).

De Shields, now a four-time Tony nominee whose résumé includes Emmy and Grammy wins, told The Banner earlier this year that he largely kept his Broadway ambitions to himself as a kid growing up in Baltimore.

“With the exception of when I would lift my child’s voice, in an attempt to match that of Rudy Lewis as he led The Drifters in the singing of ‘On Broadway,’ I jealously kept close to my vest my intentions of becoming a denizen of the very New York boulevard glorified in the song,” De Shields wrote in an email.

“Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” a ballroom-inspired reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats,” earned nine total nominations, including best musical revival.

Co-director Zhailon Levingston, nominated for best direction of a musical alongside Bill Rauch, spent time in Olney earlier this year directing the world premiere of “Little Miss Perfect” at the Olney Theatre between the off-Broadway and Broadway runs of “Cats: The Jellicle Ball.” Prior to the Broadway performances, Levingston said he was proud of the work he and his team had done and was hopeful about its future.

“It’s one of the most beautiful, complicated, challenging, rigorous, inspiring things I’ve ever gone through,” Levingston said. “It’s been incredibly exciting to make a thing that people are resonating with.”

The winners of the 79th Tony Awards will be announced June 7 at Radio City Music Hall in New York live on CBS and Paramount+ at 8 p.m.
