Travelers bustled along the concourses at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on Monday morning, with one closed security checkpoint the only sign that anything was amiss.
BWI officials on Sunday alerted airline travelers to arrive at least three hours ahead of their scheduled departure times, as security lines full of spring break travelers grew.
The Transportation Security Administration, which monitors the screening checkpoints, is one of a handful of federal agencies temporarily affected by a partial government shutdown that has lasted weeks. TSA employees have been working without pay.
People flocked to social media on Sunday, telling fellow travelers to take the warning seriously and arrive at BWI Airport as early as possible. Several reported waiting in security lines for at least an hour.
Passenger wait times returned to normal Monday morning, while the A security checkpoint remained closed, BWI Airport spokesperson Jonathan Dean said.
“Those conditions are subject to change,” Dean said in a statement. “TSA staffing levels could change later in the day. We will continue to provide updated information to customers as conditions warrant.”
The TSA did not immediately respond to questions about staffing levels at BWI.
Lekisha Hodges, of Fort Washington, saw Sunday’s news and took airport officials’ warning to heart — she arrived at BWI before 10 a.m. for her 1 p.m. flight to Michigan for a work trip. The short security line was a (mostly) welcome sight.
“I felt relieved, but also thought, ‘Why did I get here so early?’ Because I also don’t like sitting around waiting,” Hodges said.
There’s still a wait, but instead of standing in line, she can do some work and catch up on texts and emails, she said.
Congress failed again over the weekend to reconcile its funding differences over the TSA’s parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security. Senate Democrats are bargaining with Republicans in a bid to rein in how the Trump administration has conducted stepped-up immigration enforcement.
Earlier Sunday, the Trump administration said it would send federal immigration agents to assist TSA.
BWI officials posted an announcement on social media Sunday evening, saying two of the security checkpoints were closed.
“Due to longer than normal checkpoint wait times, travelers are advised to arrive 3 hours before scheduled departure. Thank you for your patience.”
The airport’s website usually provides passengers with real-time estimates for wait times. But on Sunday, those estimates were temporarily removed from the airport website to “ensure accuracy of the data and information,” Dean said.
