Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport will receive more than $62 million in federal funding as part of a nationwide push to improve U.S. airports, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Thursday.

The money will help rehabilitate the tarmac on one of the airport’s two principal runways, according to airport officials, including the installation of new runway lighting.

In a news release, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the $1.776 billion in grants to airports across the nation — a nod to the year of the United States’ founding — a celebration of the country’s 250th birthday and an investment in its future.

We’re ushering in the Golden Age of Transportation and rebuilding our airport infrastructure is critical to making that vision a reality," Duffy said.

The funding provides the lion’s share of the estimated $78 million runway project. The remainder comes from state funds, according to Maryland Department of Transportation budget documents.

Other regional Maryland airports are also getting a slice of the $1.776 billion pie, bringing Maryland’s total to about $77 million. Additional awards include:

  • Crisfield-Somerset Municipal Airport: $351,000 for runway reconstruction
  • Easton Airport: $5.6 million for a runway extension and safety areas
  • Ocean City Municipal Airport: $5.4 million for taxiway reconstruction
  • Salisbury Regional Airport: $1.7 million for runway rehabilitation

“This funding does more than just rebuild runways and taxiways, it modernizes the travel experience for American families, ensuring our airports are safe and ready for the future,” said Federal Aviation Administrator Bryan Bedford in a news release.
