A Baltimore Ravens/Elon Musk tunnel project never left the station this week.

A project called “Ravens Loop” is one of three selected Tuesday by Musk’s The Boring Co. to be eligible for construction on the company’s dime.

The company put out a call for pitches in January as part of its “Tunnel Vision Challenge” for any kind of tunnel project (pedestrian, utility, a travel lane for Teslas, etc.) up to a mile long.

“We’ve been overwhelmed with the amazing submissions,” the company said on social media Tuesday.

Three winners — Charm City, Dallas and New Orleans — now can move forward with geotechnical analysis, subsurface utility investigations and coordination with local elected officials and stakeholders.

There’s a catch: When it was announced, no one seemed to know what the heck the Ravens Loop was. The Maryland Department of Transportation said it was not involved with the project. A representative from Baltimore City said the same Tuesday night.

Then, the Ravens broke the silence.

“The Boring Company identified Baltimore as a potential site through its Tunnel Vision Challenge, presenting a possibly compelling opportunity for the region,” wrote Chad Steele, senior vice president of communications for the NFL team, in an email Wednesday.

“While we appreciate being selected, the concept is only in the exploratory phase and following discussions with public partners, we have determined we will not continue with the process at this time. We are grateful for the collaboration and remain supportive of initiatives that drive innovation and investment in Baltimore.”

The Ravens have not responded to a request for more information about the proposal.

The Boring Co. also has not responded to a request for comment.

“We appreciate that the Ravens are always dreaming big about how to deliver wins for Baltimore,” said Tracy King, a spokesperson for Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, in an email Wednesday. “They have been great partners to the City and our region, and we support their decision to withdraw the application.”

The Boring Co. was founded in 2017 to fulfill Musk’s vision for hyperloop intercity transportation using high-speed capsules in pressurized tunnels to move people and goods, like the pneumatic tubes used in banks and some hospitals.

Today, it uses a proprietary tunnel boring machine it calls Prufrock to dig tunnels that can fit one car travel lane. It allows Boring to build major infrastructure at a fraction of the cost and much faster than other companies doing similar work, according to the company.

It’s responsible for the Vegas Loop, a growing network of tunnels underneath Las Vegas filled with colorful LED lights and Tesla vehicles moving people between Sin City’s attractions.

Critics say it’s essentially a less efficient reinvention of a subway — trains can move many more people than a series of individual cars.

This isn’t the first time the company’s name has come up in connection with Baltimore tunnels. Federal officials floated Boring last year for an advisory role in Amtrak’s work digging the future Frederick Douglass Tunnel in West Baltimore, according to The New York Times.

This story has been corrected to call the proposal a tunnel project, not a transit project.
