[The latest: Towson University dorm shooting occurred during attempted robbery]

Police arrested a person after a self-inflicted, non-life-threatening shooting in a dorm at Towson University on Thursday evening.

The person was not affiliated with the university, Towson University President Mark Ginsburg said in a statement released Friday morning. That person discharged a handgun and the bullet struck them in the lower body.

There was no ongoing threat Thursday night, according to university spokesperson Sean J. Welsh.

Officers with the university police and the Baltimore County Police Department responded around 9:15 p.m. to reports of shots fired in the stairwell of Tower C, a residence hall.

The injured person was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No one else was hurt in the incident, Welsh said. In a post on social media, officials urged students to avoid the area of Tower C on the campus amid the police’s investigation.

Baltimore County Police said the department would send a news release about the incident once approved.

The shooting occurred the night before the TigerFest concert, the one of the biggest social events on the university’s campus.

Towson University is among the largest schools in the University System of Maryland, with around 19,000 students enrolled.

On Sept. 3, 2021, three people were injured in a shooting at an unsanctioned party on Towson University’s campus. Thursday’s shooting comes as, just last week, the Maryland Supreme Court began hearing arguments over whether one of the victims, Catherine Torney, can sue the university for negligence.

Baltimore County Police is investigating this case. Anyone with information may call 410-887-INFO.
