Anne Arundel County Police are investigating what the agency called a “random” burglary and sexual assault in Severn early Sunday morning.
A woman told officers she woke around 1 a.m. Sunday to an unknown male sitting on her bed and sexually assaulting her, the Police Department said in a news release. When she began screaming, the suspect ran away.
Police spokesperson Marc Limansky said the woman called 911.
Officers from the Western District station responded around 1:10 a.m. Sunday to her home, which is in the 700 block of Old Donaldson Avenue.
The department’s news release said officers and police dogs searched the area for a suspect to no avail.
Limansky called the incident “an unlawful touching, like a fourth-degree sex offense.”
He said the victim was not physically injured but was traumatized by the incident.
Police described the suspect as wearing a gray or black hooded sweatshirt.
“The detectives are working on it. They’re canvassing the neighborhood looking for any video surveillance,” Limansky said.
He said police encourage anyone who saw anything to call detectives at 410-222-8760. Those with information who wish to remain anonymous can dial the county’s tip line at 410-222-4700.
